Service: The Mobile Disc Golf Experience
Location: Devil’s Backbone Brewery
City: Roseland, VA
The Big Idea for The Mobile Disc Golf Experience at Devils Backbone Brewing Company was to not only provide an additional on-site recreational activity for the festival patrons, but to take advantage of the under utilized space in a way that moved users through the site while still complimenting the trails and race course tracks the circumvented the course. Our first visit to Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company was a 3-hole design at The Festy Experience, with our next visit coming at Nelson County Trail Daze where we installed a 5-hole course.
The 3-hole course at The Festy Experience in October 2012 utilized a 2.2 acre parcel of land that was completely unusable to the festival organizers due to its overgrown nature. With the help of Goat Busters, an earth-friendly, brush clearing and invasive species management company, we were able to maximize the parcel to its fullest potential, bringing in 3 holes of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience and seeing over 250 users over the duration of the festival.
The 5-hole course at Nelson County Trail Daze in May 2013 was able to offer a much larger scale course design, with longer bombing field holes as well as tight, technical wooded holes — all complimenting the on-site uses such as bike racers, 5k runners, campers and more. The course was extremely popular, enough so that we have continued to conduct site analysis for a permanent course in the future.
The property at Devils Backbone Brewing Company is quite expansive and we look forward to continually bringing disc golf to this location. With multiple orchard planting, rolling fields, severe changes in elevation and mountain viewsheds surrounding the property, this is a wonderful opportunity to bring disc golf to Nelson County. The variety of shots we have found through our two installation of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience is only scratching the surface in terms of what is out there. From technical tunnel shots and buncred greens to meticulously maintained scattered rough lines and big field bombers, the future course at Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company will demand a wide variety of shots from players of all ages and skill levels.
The two Mobile Disc Golf Experience’s we have designed and installed at Devils Backbone Brewing Company have been some of our most successful events to date! While complimenting the existing infrastructure whenever possible, The Mobile Disc Golf Experience has turned dozens of people on to disc golf, while at the same time bringing to light some of the gorgeous vegetation on mountain viewsheds on the property. You can look for The Mobile Disc Golf Experience by Explore Disc Golf at several more music festivals this summer, but please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to bring disc golf to your next event!
