The Big Idea for the 9-hole course design on the Kennebunkport Consolidated School campus was to bring awareness to the growing sport of disc golf through a beginner-friendly layout that moves users to several unique portions of the site. Rolling fields and towering specimen trees make up the property in this coastal Maine town, as the design of the course highlights several underutilized portions of the property that many didn’t even know existed.
This course features a series of short holes, with the longest hole reaching 207′ in distance. Many of the holes are in the 100′ to 150′ range, with a premium being focus on basket location. Several baskets are located between towering maples trees, or on the edge of a “turtleback green” that demands precision off the tee. Students ranges from grades K-5 at Kennebunkport Consolidated School, so it was of the utmost importance that this course be an encouraging, beginner-friendly layout. In addition to the 9 holes and 30 DX discs, the school invested in the EDGE curriculum from Innova Disc Golf, which is a 200+ page book with lesson plans and games for the physical education department to implement. This is a great way to ensure the success of this new installation!
The 9-hole course design and flagging has been complete, while the installation of the baskets by the school should come this fall. The implementation of the EDGE curriculum will be of great value to the school and its staff, with the course only being a short walk from the gym. The layout offers a variety of shot making, taking advantage of changes in topography and framing specimen plantings whenever possible. We look forward to seeing many newcomers to the sport coming out of Kennebunkport Consolidated School!
