The Big Idea for the design at New England College was to take advantage of the underutilized space along the mountainside that is located in close proximity to the popular athletic Turf Field and Ice Rink. Currently, the parcel above the Turf Field and parking lot is only home to a few hiking trails and a Ropes Course. With dozens of sprawling rock outcroppings and large changes in elevation found in this section of the campus, it made perfect sense for a 9-hole disc golf course for students and area residents to enjoy.
In its current state, the course is a permanent 9-hole layout, but our firm has already Master Planned 18 holes. The course begins and ends at the parking lot adjacent to the Turf Field, and focuses on moving across the mountainside in such a fashion that players are not only connected to significant on-site features like rock outcroppings, specimens trees and the Ropes Course, but tasked with a variety of shot making as the layout traverses the undulating topography of the site.
The course only measures 2,202′ in total length, but this Par 28 layout plays much longer as steep changes in elevation are found on every hole. Many holes on the course also feature large rock outcroppings, which can be found on holes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Specimen trees are also found towering over many baskets, as the property is a perfect fit for a disc golf course.
Our firm tried to find the perfect balance between technically challenging, but also encouraging a positive first time experience for beginners. We look forward to the potential for gravel tee pads and the addition of a back 9 at New England College, as the course has been well-received since opening in September 2015.
