Service: Design and Site Planning
Location: Pine Brook Camp
City: Shutesbury, MA
Status: In progress
The Big Idea for the 9-hole course design of Pine Brook Camp was to provide camp users with a fun on-site activity that takes advantage of the underutilized space of the 140 acre campus. As you could image by the name, towering pine trees make up the majority of the site, while large changes in elevation along the periphery of the parcel offer some fantastic variety in terms of pin placement and scenic views. The permanent course design is still in progress, but our firm did setup a 9-hole course during a wedding in October, and several holes from that layout will be utilized in the final design.
Pine Brook Camp is in Shutebury, MA on the edge of Lake Wiola. Several streams and tributaries run throughout the site, providing access for canoes and kayaks to the nearby lake. There are also a variety of activities on-site like tennis, soccer, archery, a ropes course and now disc golf! Hiking trails and bunk houses can also be found throughout the site as Pine Brook Camp provides the infrastructure for thousands of children that partake in a variety of summer camps in this gospel-center Christian camping experience.
The initial layout at Pine Brook Camp has pin pointed several key areas that will be connected to during the final design phase. Most notably, the 1st hole is located on a shelf that is 25′ feet above where the basket is located. This shelf is home to 5-6 bunk houses and a larger fire pit, but the tee box is located off on the corner where it is visible yet out of harms way. The tee shot is framed by two specimen maple trees, while a 30′ gap between trees that runs 207′ all the way to the basket. A putter or midrange is all players need here, but there is a premium placed on accuracy and accounting for the large change in elevation to make birdie. Other features that will be connected to in the final design are a series of unique, specimen trees located down next to the athletic fields, as well as a large pit at the top of the site that provides a wonderful teeing area with a framed fairway and a tricky pin placement.
Our firm will continue to make site visits to Pine Brook Camp throughout the winter, finalizing the design in early spring. This course will be closed to the public, but we look forward to providing another wonderful asset to this beautiful property and seeing disc golf continue to grow in Western Massachusetts.
