Service: The Mobile Disc Golf Experience
Location: Hudson Valley Resort and Spa
City: Kerhonkson, NY
The Big Idea for The Mobile Disc Golf Experience at Hudson Valley Resort and Spa was to provide users with a varied experience on a traditional golf course located at the base of the resort adjacent to a large lake. The disc golf course utilized heavily wooded areas, severe changes in topography, the open space of the golf course, multiple bunkers and an old, rundown fire pit — demanding a wide variety of shot making from hole to hole.
Our firm had long looked forward to the opportunity to design a disc golf course on a traditional golf course, and were extremely excited when we contracted a 9 hole layout for Rock N Roll Resort — an intimate festival located in the Catskill mountains of New York. The design was done in a such a fashion that several existing tees were utilized for their flat teeing surfaces, while the bunkers marked as Out of Bounds helped shape holes that would traverse an otherwise open landscape. Each hole demanded a different set of shots, while the mountains reflecting off the lake provided the perfect backdrop for a serene spring weekend.
The 1st, 5th, 8th and 9th holes all used Out of Bounds bunkers to their advantage, while the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th holes meandered throughout wooded sections of the course. The 6th hole was situated next to the lake — where many patrons spent the afternoon — on an old fireplace where two smokestacks flanked the basket, leaving a difficult putt for anyone who’s disc landed pin high.
With a mixture of ace runs, mandos, low ceilings, big bombers, breathtaking vistas, turtleback greens, Out of Bounds bunkers and lush fairways, this 9 hole installation was one of the most varied we have done so far. Not every tee on the traditional golf course was used as a tee pad, and not every fairway was used as fairway, but we did try and overlap some of the existing uses to reward the players for throwing good shots, or giving them a fair surface to tee from — both tying back to disc golf’s predecessor. In the spirit of bunkers being hazards in traditional golf, we used the bunkers as Out of Bounds to try and demand precision on all shots, and this technique was highly enjoyed by all!
This will go down as one of our absolute favorite versions of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience for a long time to come. The course offered so much variety, yet was very enjoyable for beginners. The tournament held on Saturday had 18 registrants, with Magic Hat discs going to all contestants and prizes being awarded to tournament winners, as well as longest drive and closest to the pin. You can look for The Mobile Disc Golf Experience by Explore Disc Golf at several more music festivals this summer, but please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to bring disc golf to your next event!
