Disc Golf Consultations ramping up as summer approaches!
If you have kept up with our newsletters, you can tell that a reoccurring theme of ours is that we encourage Consultations to be help in the spring, fall or winter as thick, lush summer vegetation really slows the process down in terms of available land to gain access to. Much of this spring has seen our firm traveling all over the Northeast, the most recent of which was for a Consultation in Southwest Connecticut. We spent the morning in the Parks and Rec office looking at maps and answering questions, and then spent the remainder of the day looking at a total of five parcels. In the following days, we returned to our office and put together a site-specific document to detail our findings, ultimately suggesting the most appropriate site for disc golf. Numerous sites were absolutely incredible, and the town knew that bringing in a professional firm such as ours was necessary to ensure that their Disc Golf investment (much like their new skate park) would be safe, properly located, and well-received by local residents. Is your town considering a Consultation before jumping into a disc golf project? Book us today!

The Mobile Disc Golf Experience sets up on traditional golf course!
For the 3rd straight year, The Mobile Disc Golf Experience was contracted for Rock N Roll Resort in the NY Catskills this past April. This is a wonderfully exciting weekend for us, as it’s one of a few opportunities a year we get to setup on a traditional golf course! While the course itself is still closed, we typically use the the wood lines and dirt cart paths between holes to provide the fairways of the disc golf course. The occasional open field bomber is always fun, as is using some of the sand bunkers on the course to delineate Out of Bounds near a basket. This design is one of our favorite to come back to ever year and tweak here and there, as players really enjoy the layout and opportunity to play on a traditional golf course. We look forward to our busy spring where The Mobile Disc Golf Experience will be setup at numerous events — from SoccerFest and numerous Fun Run events here in Amherst, MA to music festivals up and down the East Coast!

Course Design of Thacher State Park back 9 is progressing nicely!
We have been busy this winter working on the new back 9 course design at Thacher State Park in Vorheesville, NY! The park initially contacted us last summer to purchase baskets for their front 9, which was designed and installed by their maintenance manager. After seeing the demand for the original layout, the park manager contacted our firm to not only purchase baskets for the back 9, but to contract our design services as well! While they had a Master Plan to follow, many of the holes were refined in our Routing Plan and then later dialed in during Final Flagging. The maintenance division is currently in the midst of Course Clearing, with only a couple holes left to finish. Our firm is scheduled to be back in early April to make any final adjustments before baskets and tee pad construction begins.

viewed from the entrance to the Disc Golf Course.

The existing front 9 layout is a mix of field and moderately wooded holes, with a short “executive” feel to the course. The park requested the back 9 feature longer holes — the current layout has four Par 4’s — to contrast to the more beginner-friendly front 9. The majority of the holes run adjacent to an access road that will eventually be removed in the Master Plan. Many of the holes have a open context, but several technical wooded holes provide a strong juxtaposition to some of the earlier field holes. The park intends to create paver tee pads for the back 9, and eventually fix the undersized gravel tee pads on the front 9 in the future. We hope to approve the Course Clearing in early April, and see the course up and operational by May 2016!

Signage for Pine Brook Camp finalized and delivered!

Our firm finished our 9-hole course design at Pine Brook Camp in Shutesbury, MA in the fall of 2015. The course was very well received by teen camps throughout the year, but updated signage was imperative. This winter we started working on custom course signage, and recently delivered it in late February. All Explore Disc Golf signage is hand rendered, printed in full color on aluminum blanks. Proper course signage is an wonderful investment in a well-received disc golf course, as wayfinding through nature is very important to ensure players want to return again. If you have any questions please contact us today for more information on pricing, sizing options and turnaround time!

Explore Disc Golf continues Consultation services throughout mild winter!
It’s been another busy winter in the Explore Disc Golf office, as we continue to exhibit at conferences, as well as conduct Consultations and Feasibility Studies at a variety of locations that are looking to install disc golf in the upcoming year. We recently checked out a 150-acre parcel along North Shore Mass that is interested in adding disc golf to an underutilized section of their property. The portion of the property that would be best suited for disc golf is roughly 40-acres with a change in elevation of 90 feet! There are several specimen trees, groves of Norway spruces, and rolling topography throughout. As is customary with all our Consultation services, the clients received a site-specific document that provides site analysis, project budget, reasons to install disc golf, and much more to use in their future discussions. Interested in booking a Consultation or Feasibility Study? Please contact us soon!

The Mobile Disc Golf Experience goes on Mass Appeal!
Amherst Winterfest is right around the corner, and we were recently invited to bring The Mobile Disc Golf Experience on Mass Appeal to promote this new activity that will be featured at our town’s annual outdoor celebration! Amherst Winterfest sees roughly 3,000 people come out in the dead of winter to participate in the Cardboard Classic, Best in Snow Dog Show, Chili Cookoff, fireworks and more. This year, we will be bringing 3 holes of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience, and couldn’t be more excited! Our time spent on Mass Appeal was a lot of fun, as we talked about Amherst Winterfest, how to play disc golf, and even took some putts! Amherst Winterfest runs from 12:00pm-6:00pm at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst, MA on Saturday, February 20th. Come join the fun!

Need course signage? Contact us today!
Course signage can really make or break a disc golf course. From a wayfinding perspective, getting lost or disoriented in nature plays a huge role in users not wanting to return to a specific site again. Good news! Explore Disc Golf is proud to offer in-house sign manufacturing! We offer tee signs, course maps and wayfinding signage — all of which are hand-rendered, and printed in full color on aluminum signs. Each sign comes with a wealth of information, including custom section-elevations, providing players with the most information possible to help in the execution of the perfect shot. While our signage comes with all Explore Disc Golf disc golf course designs, we are also steadily contracted to make course maps and tee signs for courses that are looking for a more professional representation. Please contact us today for more information on pricing, sizing options and turnaround time!

Our hand-drawn signage comes in 9″ x 12″ and 12″ x 18″ sizes, and includes a wealth of information, including change in elevation and custom section-elevations of each hole!

UMass Amherst approves permanent signage for disc golf course!
After nearly 3 years, officials at UMass Amherst have green-lighted permanent signage for the
9-hole disc golf course our firm designed and installed in March 2013. The course was proposed in May 2010, and underwent a long approval process before a “Proof of Concept” phase was agreed upon. After the course was deemed a success in May 2013, it was allowed to become a permanent fixture on the Commonwealth’s flagship campus. While this was very rewarding, permanent signage and tee pads were never given permission until December 2015. It is now with great excitement that our graphics department has begun hand rendering tee signs and the course map for the course! Manufacturing will begin soon, while we hope to see Facilities Management installing the signs in late winter.

Consultations and Feasibility Studies continue throughout winter months!
By now, many of you have probably heard us say “Book your Consultations in the winter months due to increased visibility” numerous times. Over the December-January time period, we have been contracted for Feasibility Studies on three different parcels, and have two more coming up before the end of the month. Recently, we were brought to a property that was looking for a private-pay-to-play course on 26 acres in Eastern Massachusetts, as well as a 70-acre parcel with a Conservation Restriction. The Conservation Restriction parcel was quite intriguing, as the rather inconspicuous landscape found at the entry and arrival sequence gave way to drastic changes in topography, specimen trees and even a beautiful cove near the parcel’s southern edge. We look forward to following up with each of these clients, and hopefully returning to both sites in the early Spring!

We are proud members of the Innova Disc Golf Ambassador Team for 4th year in a row!
The concept of Explore Disc Golf was hatched while receiving our Masters in Landscape Architecture at UMass Amherst in 2010. The first appearance of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience came in 2012, while our first permanent course design was finally approved in December 2012. Following up on continued conversations with Innova Disc Golf — the leading manufacturer in the game — Team Manager Jonathan Poole sent an e-mail inviting us to become a member of their Ambassador Team in January 2013. We cannot thank Innova Disc Golf enough for seeing the potential we had at Explore Disc Golf early on, as we are so thrilled to announce that we’ve been asked back for the 4th straight year!

We are so extremely blessed to be a part of the Innova Disc Golf family!

Welcome to Explore Disc Golf’s 2015 Year In Review newsletter
As we settle into a very mild December here in the Northeast, we wanted to take a moment to look back on a busy 2015 through our Year In Review newsletter. Some company facts include:

1.) Designed 8 permanent courses, including unique design opportunities with Girl Scouts of America, New York State Parks, and a private course for employees at a 25-acre office park outside of Boston; 2.) Traveled over 9,000 miles with The Mobile Disc Golf Experience to music festivals, Kids Days, team building events; and 3.) Sent rental equipment to corporate outings for Saucony and ESPN, as well as to multiple school systems throughout the country. All told, the sport of disc golf saw tremendous growth in 2015, and we at Explore Disc Golf feel very blessed to do what we do!

Explore Disc Golf’s first pay-to-play course at Pineland Farms in Maine!
While its hard to choose our favorite course design of the year, we’d be hard pressed not to lean towards our 9-hole pay-to-play course at Pineland Farms in Maine. While our firm has Master Planned an 18-hole layout, the course is currently a 9-holer that measures more than 3,500′ in length! We were contacted in November 2014 for a Feasibility Study of the property, and later contracted for the course design in April 2015. The course features large changes in elevation, connects users to a variety of significant on-site features, offers a marketplace for food at the turn, and provides beautiful views of Mount Washington from the 1st tee. Overall, the course is extremely enjoyable and meticulously maintained — keeping with the high standards of the Pineland Farms brand. This course is definitely worth a visit!

Disc Golf at State Parks is catching on!
Explore Disc Golf is very excited to see disc golf continually being implemented at State Parks throughout the Northeast, and we look forward to this trend continuing to grow in 2016 and beyond. In May 2014, our firm brought 9 holes of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience to Saratoga Spa State Park in New York. A year later, we were contacted by the park manager to begin designing a permanent course with dual tee pads for each hole. The design was later approved, and then installed and cleared by the fine folks at DisCap. These guys are doing amazing things for the game, and we suggest you check them out! In the fall of this year, our firm was brought on to design the back 9 at John Boyd Thacher State Park (also in New York), which should be coming in early 2016. We’re also very excited to be working with a State Park in Vermont on a project that will hopefully confirm soon. It’s great to see disc golf in demand at State Parks, as it’s a wonderful form of passive recreation and terrific exposure for the sport!

The Mobile Disc Golf Experience proves fun for any occasion or event!
The Mobile Disc Golf Experience is a wonderful service we provide here at Explore Disc Golf to a variety of different clientele. Our first Mobile was at a small-scale music festival in Vermont back in May 2012, and since then this service has grown exponentially! While we continue to be contracted by music festivals up and down the East Coast and even into the Midwest, some of our favorite stops are right here in the Northeast where we bring disc golf to events like Burlington Kids Day in Vermont, Kutztown Days in Pennsylvania, and even multiple team building events like the one seen below for Information Services Group’s Strategy Retreat in Norwalk, CT this fall. Looking for a fun activity at your next event, or annual conference? Contact us to learn more about The Mobile Disc Golf Experience, or our Rental Program!

Explore Disc Golf brings The Mobile Disc Golf Experience to corporate retreat!

As we briefly touched on in our last newsletter, our firm was contracted to bring 9 holes of
The Mobile Disc Golf Experience to a company retreat in Norwalk, CT in late October. We can’t even begin to express how much fun was had by all! The conference was a 3-day retreat for a large tech company with offices located all over the world. The leadership teams from each office had classes and breakout sessions throughout the weekend, with 2 hours of activity time on Saturday. After initial conversations with management, no one on their leadership team had played disc golf before, but all were very excited as they had heard the sport was highly accessible to all ages and skill levels. This couldn’t have been more true!
Explore Disc Golf
The beautifully demanding 4th hole, measuring 242′ in length, offered multiple lines to the basket, but easily played the hardest on the 9-hole layout. Par was a good score here!
The venue for the course was a meticulously maintained parcel with rolling fields, undulating topography in the serene woodland, multiple ponds, and specimen trees as far as the eye could see. As much as we wanted to move users throughout the woods, connecting to some of the ponds while maximizing the entire site, we geared back to provide a very enjoyable 9-hole course that was beginner-friendly and guaranteed to create a positive first time experience. After a brief overview of the rules, discs were handed out for a quick demo next to the 1st hole. After everyone was ready, we broke into teams of two, playing a scramble format for 18 holes with the winning team receiving custom I-Dye discs!
Explore Disc Golf
A two-some putts for birdie on the 160′ uphill par 3 5th hole. Get in there!
Overall, the entire leadership team had an incredible time playing our 9-hole disc golf course, and expressed interest in booking us for a future conference! We highly enjoyed designing the course and running from hole to hole to encourage each team and offer tips when asked. The layout of the course provided a variety of different shots, giving team members a taste of tight and technical, as well as big field bombers and our signature “turtleback greens.” We even took the time to create a bonus hole for Explore Disc Golf staff to enjoy, as we found a beautiful island hole during our morning site analysis. Measuring 175′ in length from tee to green, the island only measured 18′ deep by 30′ wide, demanding accuracy in every sense of the word. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time enjoying this hole!
Explore Disc Golf
Our temporary island hole — reminiscent of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass for traditional golfers — gobbled up a couple discs, but eventually yielded some birdies (and lots of nerves).
Our firm has now setup Mobile courses (or provided rental equipment) to many large corporations such as Saucony, ESPN, Premera Blue Cross and Athena Healthcare in the past couple of years. Disc golf is a wonderful form of passive recreation, and platform for team bonding, so we encourage you to contact us if you’d like to bring disc golf to your next event or annual conference! Thanks again for taking the time to read our newsletter. We’ve been spending a lot of time conducting Feasibility Studies and Consultations this fall, and are currently gearing up for a couple conferences around the holidays. In case you missed October’s monthly newsletter, please click on the link to get all caught up. Thanks again for reading everyone — until next time, promote the sport and throw ’em straight!

The Mobile Disc Golf Experience’s 2015 summer tour is complete!

As some of you may know by now, The Mobile Disc Golf Experience is a traveling disc golfcourse that our firm brings to schools, corporate events and large music festivals throughout the year. Our staff designs and installs the course, makes custom signage on-site and even hands out free disc loaners for all to play! This year, our summer tour once again took us over 8,000 miles up and down the East Coast, ultimately capped off by one of our favorite events of the year — The Festy Experience in beautiful Nelson County, VA — where our firm was contracted to design a 9-hole disc golf course around a Cider Distillery at the base of an incredible mountain range.
Festy 1
The 242′ 5th hole at The Festy Experience ran along side this stream — moving users to a beautiful cascading rock formation where many stopped for lunch or group pictures.
The 9-hole course measured 2,852′ long and played to a par 30. This was one of our longer Mobile courses, as we typically try and lay out beginner-friendly holes to ensure a positive first time experience. Having been to this festival three times prior — and to Virginia-based events 11 times in the past 4 years — we know these folks love their disc golf so we did our best to come up with a technical layout that was fun for all skill levels. This course, while rather flat in topography, did have a demanding par 4 and par 5 as well as multiple holes that ran along a beautiful on-site stream behind the Cider Distillery. Overall, the course was VERY well received by both advanced and recreational players! As sad as it is to pack up these Mobile designs, we are excited for our next opportunity where we are contracted for a 9-hole Mobile for a corporate team bonding event at a 60-acre estate in Connecticut later this month! We’ve setup Mobile courses (or rent equipment to) many large corporations such as Saucony, ESPN and Athena Heatltcare throughout the year, so please contact us if you’d like to bring disc golf to your next event or annual conference!
NY
The 268th 5th hole at Disc Jam Music Festival offered players two tight lines to a fairly unprotected basket. This Mobile layout comes from early June in New York.
Thank you to Innova Disc Golf for your loyal sponsorship!
We can not begin to say enough good things about our dear friends at Innova Disc Golf, and how grateful we are to be sponsored by the game’s leading manufacturer! Our paths first crossed with some of the Innova guys in Charlotte, NC in 2011. They believed in our firm’s mission from the get-go and eventually signed our firm’s owner, Brian Giggey, to the Innova Ambassador Team in January 2013. Eventually, as The Mobile Disc Golf Experience went from “Proof of Concept” phase in 2012 to more than 15 appearances annually throughout the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast, Innova Disc Golf become exclusive sponsors in 2015. Throughout the year’s Innova Disc Golf has never asked for exclusivity, but we have always been happy to provide it, as we truly believe that Innova discs are the only option for a player’s first “in-hand” experience. Thank you, Innova!

Thank you Innova Disc Golf for years of support, and your sponsorship of
The Mobile Disc Golf Experience 2015 summer tour!
Thanks again for taking the time to read our newsletter. 9-hole Course Design at New England College is now playable!
Our firm is excited to announce the completion of another Explore Disc Golf course design! The last couple of months have been spent in the woods at New England College in Henniker, NH, where we were tasked with design and installation of 9 holes, while Master Planning a full 18-hole course for future expansion. The 9-hole layout moves students to a variety of towering specimen trees and rock outcroppings, while circumventing the popular ropes course next to the turf field and hockey rink on campus. The course officially opened to students and the public earlier this month!

While the layout only measures 2,200′ in total length, large changes in elevation play a big part throughout the course. The ultimate goal of the design was to appeal to beginners and reinforce a positive experience for first-timers while still challenging advanced players. We believe we achieved this goal, as feedback has been very positive from the administration, college students and local players. We hope to return to the site one day soon for the expansion to a full 18-hole course, but until then we encourage you to take a visit and enjoy this scenic course in beautiful Henniker, NH!

Fall and Winter are the best time for Consultations and Feasibility Studies!
As the fall weather begins to settle in, our consultation services begin to ramp up! While one may think summer is our busiest time of year, our firm is consistently booked throughout the fall and winter with initial site visits, consultations and feasibility studies. Many clients reach out in the summer months, but our firm typically schedules initial site visits in the fall to maximize our time in the Site Analysis phase. That being said, we encourage anyone interested in a disc golf course in 2016 to book our firm for a consultation or feasibility study this fall. We work throughout the winter months (gladly switching to snow shoes for site visits!) as downed leaves increase visibility and snow fall helps denote high and low points, water collection/run off areas and more. If interested in booking our firm for a consultation, please contact us for pricing and availability.
Consultations

This consultation in December 2014 resulted in two 9-hole courses for Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. Winter site visits helped expose this eventual “postage stamp” green.

New England College: Explore Disc Golf newest 9-hole disc golf course design!

While we are just now announcing this course design, this project dates back to September 2014 when our firm was first brought on site to conduct a feasibility study for a disc golf course on the New England College campus in Henniker, NH. Funding was approved over the winter months, contracts were signed in early summer, and our firm began Site Analysis and Inventory in mid-June. While the property has been Master Planned for an 18-hole layout, the course is currently going to be 9 holes — moving users to specimen trees, multiple rock outcroppings and throughout steep changes in elevation, while strengthening the connection from the center of campus to the disc golf course, ropes course and extensive trail infrastructure.

As you can see in some of the pictures, our firm has already moved into Final Flagging and finished the initial Rough Cut of the course. The next month will find our staff refining the clearing of the course, manufacturing signage, and installing baskets. We look forward to getting back on site and continuing to expose the dozens of rock outcroppings throughout the property, and getting the course playable by the time students return to campus. This layout is a technical, beginner-friendly design that will continually reward good shots and punish poor ones. The large changes in elevation and tight gaps off the tee will challenge advanced players, while the overall length and beauty of the course’s surrounding should encourage first time players to continually return and help reinforce a positive first time experience. More updates coming soon!

School is almost back in session — book your Disc Golf Rentals for the fall!
It’s been very exciting to send disc golf rentals from coast to coast all summer long, and we hope to ramp up our Rental Program with schools this fall. We currently have dozens of baskets and hundreds of discs in our rental division, many of which are constantly circling the country as they touch down at 4-H camps, company outings, bachelor parties and more. We most recently sent 9 baskets and 25 discs to a town celebration weekend in Pennsylvania followed by 6 baskets and 50 discs to a bible college outside of Boston. If you are interested in bringing disc golf to your fall sports program this year, please contact us to inquire about pricing and duration of rentals.

Explore Disc Golf’s first State Park course design comes to Saratoga Springs, NY!

It is with great excitement that we announce Explore Disc Golf is currently in the midst of it’s first disc golf course design at a State Park! Our newest course design comes from Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, NY where we will be designing a 2-tee/1-basket layout to form an 18-hole course that circumvents the popular Peerless Pool. The course will also be located in close proximity to Saratoga Performing Arts Center which is one of the most popular outdoor amphitheaters in the country. With a capacity of 25,000 people and an annual calendar of 20-25 concerts a year, the amphitheater attracts roughly 500,000 over the course of the summer — many of which spend their afternoons at Peerless Pool before the show. Talk about exposure!
Saratoga Spa State Park

Saratoga Spa State Park is one of the most popular of the New York State Parks!

The State Park adopted disc golf into their Master Plan in 2008, but it was after our firm brought 9 holes of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience to the park for two Dave Matthews Band shows in May 2014 that the project really got some steam behind it. The park reached out to our firm and let us know that they would like us to slightly modify the 9 hole temporary design, and move forward with a permanent course by summer 2015. While the course is located on a rather flat, open portion of the property, the lines are still technical and the routing moves users to a wide variety of significant on-site features like birch groves and towering maples. We are very excited about this opportunity and look forward to seeing disc golf being played in Saratoga Springs later this summer!
The 242' 6th hole from The Mobile Disc Golf Experience made the cut, and will be a permanent hole on the final design. This hole connects users to the two largest trees on the property while providing two technical lines to a protected basket short of a well-used pavilion.

Pineland Farms Disc Golf Course in Maine is officially open for play!
If you’ve been receiving our latest newsletters, you’ll know that we have been in our home state of Maine this summer designing a 9-hole course for Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. We were contracted for a feasibility study in November 2014, and really enjoyed taking in the sites of this gorgeous property. We took diligent notes during our one day site visit, many of which are features that have now been exposed and come in to play on the course design. Some examples include the relic-dump-turned-4th-tee, the “turtleback green” on the 4th hole, views over the functioning farm from the 6th hole, the risk-reward 7th hole, and the hidden rock outcroppings on the 8th green. This was such a fun project, and a wonderful staff to work with!

This was our very first pay-to-play course design, and hopefully, success of the front 9 will merit installation of an already Master Planned back 9. Interested players can check in at the Outdoor Recreation Center next to the 1st tee where the cost to play is $5/round or $8/day. This course is a long, technically challenging layout where a premium is put on shot placement. Several “turtleback greens” and pinched fairways will greatly reward good shots and punish poor ones. We do have good news though! The course is receiving very positive reviews, and for those who find themselves hungry while playing this 3,572′ par 31, you can simply call in your food order to the Marketplace ahead of time thanks to the menu sign located on the 8th tee. Enjoy!

The Mobile Disc Golf Experience is headed to the Midwest!
The Mobile Disc Golf Experience tour has enjoyed a month around the Northeast so we can focus on our permanent course designs, but we’re gearing back up for some big ones in August! We will continue with “putt putt” installations of The Mobile in our hometown of Amherst every Thursday in July before gearing up for three large-scale festivals in a row in CT, OH and PA, respectively. Two of these festivals are repeat appearances, and we’re excited to be welcomed back with open arms. Below are some of The Mobile Disc Golf Experience’s upcoming appearances:

Upcoming Appearances:
July 16: Kendrick Park Summer Concert Series in Amherst, MA
July 23: Kendrick Park Summer Concert Series in Amherst, MA
July 30: Kendrick Park Summer Concert Series in Amherst, MA
July 30 – August 2: Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, CT
August 6 – 8: The Werk Out in Thornville, OH
August 13 – 16: The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA

Thanks again for taking the time to read our newsletter. We have a new course design in
New Hampshire to announce in the upcoming months, so stay tuned! Hopefully in the mean time, you’ll be able to make the trek to Maine and check out the Pineland Farms course, or check out one of our other courses in the Northeast. In case you missed June’s monthly newsletter, please click on the link to get all caught up. Thanks again for reading everyone — until next time, promote the sport and throw ’em straight!
